Karen M. Gonzales Appointed Chair of 2012 CMP Board

Feb 10, 2012

Karen M. Gonzales, CMP, Senior Vice President of Membership & Operations for Destination Marketing Association International (DMAI) has assumed the role of chair of the 2012 Certified Meeting Professional Program (CMP) Board of Directors. Gonzales, formerly vice chair of the Board, replaces Martie Sparks, CMP, Vice President, Catering and Convention Service of Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino.

“My goal is to work with the board and staff in advancing the five strategic pillars from our current strategic plan while reinforcing value for the individual certification holder; maintaining program wellness; and delivering current and relevant resources globally,” said Gonzales.

“This past year has been filled with enhancements to the CMP program,” said Sparks. “From the new CMP International Standards to Computer Based Testing, we have realized huge accomplishments and I can’t think of a better person than Karen Gonzales to take over the reins. Karen has the experience, passion and integrity to make 2012 an exceptional year for CMP.”

Since the inception of the CMP program in 1985, the CMP credential has been earned by more than 14,000 meeting professionals in 35 countries and territories worldwide. To earn the designation, individuals are tested on the CMP International Standards, the collection of globally relevant best practices and competencies required to be a successful professional in the meetings industry.

Prior to DMAI, Gonzales was with Meeting Professionals International (MPI) for five years as managing director of the multicultural programs and initiatives. Before her tenure at MPI, she worked for the Denver Metro CVB for nine years as a senior city-wide sales manager where she handled citywide and Latino conventions and meetings.

Gonzales has served as a director for the Colorado Society of Association Executives, the Latin American Research and Service Agency, Denver’s Scientific & Cultural Facilities District Council, Network for Latino Meeting Professionals and several other industry related organizations.
